From Assessment to Safety
Situated at 130 Victoria Street, the Central City Hotel is an eighteen-storey reinforced concrete building, designed in 1986. NZCEL performed a damage evaluation, seismic assessment, and a strengthening design of this building.
The Central City Hotel consists of concrete cast-in-situ floors and shear walls, sitting on short piles. Using computer software, such as ETABS and OPENSEES, we were able to run a variety of complex analyses to assess the likely behaviour of the structure in the event of a major earthquake. The building was then strengthened to achieve 70% NBS to improve the safety and resilience of the structure, significantly reducing risk during a seismic event.
